SFX Makeup J-Term: Day 1

Today was the first day of SFX makeup! We started the day with Ms. Bowman showing all the students the collection of makeup purchased for this course. Each student has their own Bill Nye SFX Kit. Filled with fun items such as Latex and Colors Wheels. Photos of the fantastic makeup can be seen below:

Then, our first lesson was on basic makeup. We used TikTok filters to find our face shape and then learned to apply foundation, concealer, contour, blush, and eyeliner. This lesson aimed to enhance our features and give students a base for when we moved on to more complex makeup challenges later in the course. The students joining the course for the first time did the corrective makeup on themselves, while returners had to do it on each other.

In the afternoon, we did Old Age Makeup, a lesson led by me (Jayla) with the assistance of Sabrina and the returns, who helped throughout the afternoon. We started the lesson by showing a tutorial on Old Age before having students pick a partner and then either follow the steps in the tutorial or the ones on Schoology. As you can see from the photos below they did a great job! This lesson is the first step into character makeup, which ties into tomorrow's class where students will create their own old-aged character!

In the afternoon the returners experimented with plastic pellets. We used a kettle to heat water to melt down the plastic pellets before molding them into different prosthetics. This was a very fun and new activity and we made nose prosthetics, fangs, horns, and eyes. A few of us hope to use these pieces for character makeup starting tomorrow. Overall, it was a great first day, and we are all excited about what looks we will create in the coming days.
